Why ‘Less Is More’ Means So Much to Tracy Chevalier

Taking away concentrates what’s left. Restraint is powerful. In Girl With a Pearl Earring, the two main characters touch just twice—a hand, an ear—but readers tell me those are some of the most erotic moments they’ve read. In my new novel, The Last Runaway, the heroine is a Quaker and says little, in keeping with the tradition of silence at Quaker meetings. Through the drafts I kept cutting her lines, so that now when Honor Bright speaks, you notice.
By using fewer words, I am also giving readers the chance to fill the gaps with their own. “Less is more” encourages collaboration, which is what a book should be—a contract between writer and reader.

Title: the little things
Author: fonulyn
Rating: PG
Pairing: Minho/girl!Key (Minho/Gwiboon)
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own no one, only my dirty imagination.
Summary: Minho is a smug bastard but Gwiboon loves him anyway.
Comments: so basically stolenflower told me I should write het!minkey and mentioned Gwiboon tiptoeing to kiss Minho and this happened? lmao it’s just a drabble, but I figured I’d share :3

tl;dr: IF YOU LIKE IT, SAY IT.

Okay this is something I’ve ranted about before but here we go again.

Considering the current season, I’m going to use sujuexchange and shineesanta as examples. Both are Secret Santa -exchanges where an anonymous person writes someone else a fic, so that everyone both gives something and gets something. A wonderful idea for some fandom participation and bonding!

Yet. Look at those communities. Is there anything …striking?

The answer I’m looking for is the lack of comments. Many fics don’t have a single one, others have maybe one. It’s not because they’re all bad fics, or that there’s something wrong with them. There are perfectly good fics, genuinely well-thought through ones, that haven’t even gained one non-silent reader.

And this is something I don’t understand.

What makes people so unwilling to participate that they don’t do the smallest thing they could do to make the fandom a more interactive and happy place for everyone? It doesn’t take incredibly much effort or time to type a short comment on a fic you enjoyed. Yet so many people decide to not do it.

It makes me particularly sad when people go all “I loved that fic so much!” and when I ask them if they told the author that, the answer is usually no. At this point I have to restrain myself from shaking my computer and screeching WHY into the skies above to vent my frustration. Since. Really. WHY?

You may now argue that this is a busy time for many and yes you’re right but it’s a common phenomenon and not only in Christmas challenges/exchanges.

And no, this isn’t me trying to fish compliments or comments for me. I didn’t even participate in the sujuexchange this year. But, as a person who’s been a part of organizing such events, and as a writer, and as a human being, I know how much work people put into their fics. How much effort they put into making something good. Such effort always deserves to be rewarded.

Of course, not everything can be your cup of tea! It’s perfectly okay not to like a genre/pairing/rating/etc and not to read everything in an exchange, or in general. But please, if you do read a fic and like it, comment. Doesn’t need to be more than “I liked this! :D” if you don’t have time, or energy, or general interest in commenting at all. Even a single word can mean so much. Especially to writers who are just beginners, aren’t experienced, and really could use a boost.

This is how we can make a fandom more interactive. This is how I’ve made some of my closest, dearest friends! A single comment can lead to a conversation, and conversations can lead to everything. Ideas for new fics! General fandom squeeing! Maybe even finding your best friend forever!

It’s worth the minute it takes for you to comment. Trust me.

Pairing: Taemin/Key
Disclaimer: I own no one, only my dirty imagination.

Title: Resurgence
Author: fonulyn
Rating: NC17
Warnings: infidelity
Pairing: Minho/Key
Characters: Minho, Key, OCs
Disclaimer: I own no one, only my dirty imagination.
Summary: Some mistakes can’t be avoided, even when they keep repeating over and over again. The thing is, Minho doesn’t even really want to avoid falling into the same old trap. That is what makes it Minho’s biggest mistake. What makes him Minho’s biggest mistake.
Comments: third part! I was supposed to post this yesterday but life happened. now I’m getting sick, cuddling under a blanket drinking tea, so I figured it’d be a good moment to post :3

Comments: I bring thee a new minkey :3 for some reason I keep venturing out of my box of fluff and smut into angstier realms, but rest assured this will still have its share of fluffiness since I wouldn’t be me otherwise. this was… extremely emotional for me to write so I hope you will enjoy it!
oh, and if the beginning of this seems familiar, it’s because you’ve probably read it before! this fic is essentially an expanded version of this, elaborating on what happens after :3 so half of the first chap is previously released as that fic, the rest of it is all new.

Title: Never Say Goodbye
Author: fonulyn
Rating: NC17 (overall)
Warnings: mentions of violence (nothing very graphic) and prostitution. also I quite possibly made up half of the stuff when it comes to the police force so some factual inaccuracy.
Pairing: Minho/Key (plus ninjaing!Qmi)
Characters: Minho, Key, Ryeowook, Jonghyun, Kyuhyun, Sungmin, Onew, Donghae, Heechul
Disclaimer: I own no one, only my dirty imagination.
Summary: It’s been over two years since Minho lost Kibum, lost him without knowing why. He never expected to see him again. He definitely never expected to see him again like this. (aka Minho is a policeman and his job brings him much closer to his past than he ever thought possible.)
Comments: I haven’t posted the earlier chapters here at all since I first forgot and then thought it’d be weird if half of them are on tumblr and the rest not, haha. So here I bring you a finished fic with all of its seven chapters! \o/

Please enjoy!

Title: Shot down in flames
Author: fonulyn
Rating: NC17
Warnings: pwp
Pairing: Minho/Key
Disclaimer: I own no one, only my dirty imagination.
Summary: Minho knows it’s wrong but it doesn’t stop him from giving in to the temptation.
Comments: ok I have no excuse I just wanted to write minkey get it on. idk. someone punch me in the face so that I finish the longer fic-projects instead of always writing new short ones in between, lmao.

Title: Within the Night
Author: fonulyn
Rating: NC17
Warnings: pwp
Pairing: Minho/Key (brief mentions of others, but… just minkey really)
Disclaimer: I own no one, only my dirty imagination.
Summary: When Kibum wakes up from his dream hot, bothered and incredibly horny, he takes it out on Minho. Who is a willing victim.
Comments: this is a sequel to Getting Uncontrollable (everyone/Key), but you don’t need to read it first if you don’t want to! all you need to know is that Kibum had a very vivid dream and now he’s telling Minho about it… (plot? what are those? can one eat them?) I have a feeling someone might slaughter me for making it only minkey instead of everyone ganging up on Key again but oh well 8D MINKEY SMUT AHOY.

Warnings: character death (OCs, briefly mentioned)

On the streets, everyone knows them as Onew and Key, one the shadow of another, always together. When they’re alone there is no Onew, there is no Key. Not when they let their guard down, their pretences slip. There are only Jinki and Kibum, stripped down to the core.
